South Lido Beach Park All the way down at the south end of Lido Key, at the end of Ben Franklin Drive, is South Lido Beach Park, also known as Ted Sperling Park. This park is picnic paradise, with plenty of picnic tables and grills shaded by tall Australian pines. Updated restroom facilities, children's playground equipment, horseshoes, volleyball nets and free parking add to the reasons for choosing South Lido Park for your beach picnic. Getting Your Family into Nature at South Lido ParkThe park is located right on Big Pass, which separates Lido Key from Siesta Key. For this reason, swimming is not recommended. Instead of swimming, consider taking a hike on the nature trails, or better yet, make advanced arrangements to take a guided kayak trip with one of the local outfitters that operates in the park. You'll see manatees, dolphins, and all kinds of birds and marine life. While the southern part of the park is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and Big Pass, the northern parts (accessed from Taft Drive) are a nature preserve on Sarasota Bay and Brushy Bayou which provide opportunities for fishing and kayaking in the quiet backwaters. If you've never paddled a kayak through a mangrove tunnel you're in for a treat. The shady tunnels provide a home for all types of fish and crabs that hide among the roots of the red mangroves. If you're really quiet, you can get really close to some of the beautiful wading birds like the green heron. It's a wonderful adventure for kids! Where to Eat and Sleep Near South Lido ParkIf you're coming to South Lido Park to enjoy the day, consider bringing a picnic lunch or planning a barbeque. The scenery along Big Pass just off the picnic area is fantastic. Perfect for picnic. If you're looking for something a bit simpler, a short drive to one of the nearby hotels that offer a restaurant or grill will work out well. The other option is to head over to Saint Armand's Circle to grab a bite to eat. South Lido Park is a short drive from some hotels in the South Lido area. The Sarasota Sands resort is right next to the park, within walking distance, and just up the street is the Helmsley Sandcastle Resort.
