Accommodations on Longboat Key Longboat Key is an island of towering beachfront condominiums, immaculately tended tropical landscapes, lush green golf courses, and private beach estates hidden behind thick hedges. But it hasn't always been this way. Like most of Florida's Gulf islands, Longboat Key started its journey to civilization as a sleepy fishing village. But if you look hard enough you can still find small rental properties that still have that quaint Old-Florida beach charm. As for getting around the island, most people drive their cars, but there is a 10 mile long bike path that runs the length of the island and it gets plenty of use from visitors and residents taking a quick trip to the store or to the tennis courts, or who are just out for a ride. Accommodations on Longboat Key are largely defined by the condominium, the building of which has become an art form on the island. There's nothing quite like the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico as seen from the 10th floor of a beach front condominium. Truthfully, Longboat Key is no Fort Lauderdale when it comes to tall condominiums; most are just a few stories high. But on the southern end of the key the iconic Longboat Key Club offers both height and unparalleled amenities like golf, tennis, a marina and fine dining all rolled into one incomparable beach resort. It's true that condominiums dominate the vacation rental market on Longboat Key, but they are hardly the only game in town. Resort hotels like the Holiday Inn and Suites, and the Longboat Key Hilton offer a beach vacation experience for those who may not want to unpack to the same degree and who may be in town for a shorter stay. Another great option for a vacation rental on Longboat Key is a single family home. There are plenty of homeowners for whom their island house may be a second or third residence. These make excellent rentals, especially for larger families who may be staying for several weeks or a month. Many homes are available by the week or by the month. Don't be surprised to find plenty of rental homes that are professionally decorated and that have a boat dock, a luxurious master suite, a private pool, community tennis courts, high-end sound systems, ping-pong and pool tables, and a short walk to the beach. If your taste in accommodations leans toward a more relaxed, traditional, Old-Florida style beach experience, look for one of the older and perhaps "historic" properties on the key. Don't worry about finding anything sub-par or run-down. The older properties are, as a rule, very well maintained, and not without modern comforts. Of course there's no concierge, but you'll manage just fine; the beach is directly to the west. Click here for Longboat Key Rentals
